A night at the opera changes an opinion

by chelsea eifert

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to go to the opera. My first thought was “No thanks, I can take a nap in my own bed,” but then, for the sake of my friend that invited me I decided I would go.

I ended up seeing Beethoven’s “Fidelio.” It was a comical show with love and suspense and was surprisingly good. Although the whole performance was in German (they displayed a screen with subtitles) it was oddly entertaining and easy to stay awake. Also, Powell Symphony Hall was beautiful. The architecture inside is so amazing. It made for an even more enjoyable experience and an evening to remember.

Now, don’t get me wrong. There were still some of the stereotypical aspects to the opera. It was filled with old people. Truly, I think I was one of the youngest people there. And it did seem a bit long. The first half dragged a bit and at one point I caught my friend and me yawning in unison. Also, it is not cheep. I was fortunate enough not to have to pay but I know the tickets cost about $50 a piece and some can cost over $100.

All in all, I’m so happy I went. It’s something I’m glad to have experienced and I think everyone should try the opera at least once in their life.
